Who We Are

The Capital Group is a volunteer-led affiliate of the national Sierra Club, the largest, oldest, and most effective grassroots environmental organization in the country. The Sierra Club is a nonprofit, member-supported, public interest organization that promotes conservation of the natural environment by influencing public policy decisions.

Our group (one of 14 across North Carolina) is one of the largest in the state, serving over 10,000 supporters across central North Carolina.

What We Do

Our group focuses on exploring, enjoying, and protecting our environment by working on Conservation, Politics, and Outings. We are committed to issues that impact our environment and communities, including:

  • Equity & Justice
  • Public Transit
  • Food systems
  • Sustainable land use and green space
  • Climate Change
  • Dirty Fuels
  • Clean Energy & Policy
  • Air & Water Quality

Events and Activities

Our group participates in a wide range of activities, from documentary screenings and educational programs to political workshops and community tablings.

We maintain multiple event calendars to make sure our supporters have access to a wide range of activities. Click the 'Learn More' button to access all our resources!

The Sierra Club is one of few environmental organizations that is able to participate in political work, including political endorsements and fundraising, as well as direct lobbying. While you do not have to be a member of the Sierra Club to participate in our events, we encourage you to join or renew your membership in order to hear about our important political work.

We’re ALWAYS looking for volunteers to get involved locally and help the environment.

Whatever your interest — local politics, hiking, activism, or socializing — there is an opportunity for you to make a difference with the Capital Group Sierra Club.

If you're excited about protecting our environment, send us a message and we'll find a place for you in our group! You can also contact us at any time to suggest an activity or event.
